For Nick Ruggeri, merchant services has been a growth story from the very beginning.

As Senior District Sales Manager for Merchant Services at Paychex, Ruggeri has spent the past eight years building and leading teams that deliver payment solutions to businesses across the country. During that time, his division has expanded from three teams and 36 sales representatives to five teams and more than 60 reps today.

His teams are responsible for closing merchant services opportunities generated across Paychex’s nationwide client base.

That base is substantial. Paychex supports roughly 800,000 clients, many of whom become candidates for merchant services through Ruggeri’s division.

Throughout Ruggeri’s entire tenure in the industry, one partner has played a key role in that growth story: CardConnect.

“Since the BluePay transition, we’ve only continued to grow,” Ruggeri says. “CardConnect has been a huge part of that.”

A Seamless Transition That Built Momentum

Paychex originally partnered with BluePay before BluePay was acquired by CardConnect. For Ruggeri and his team, the transition represented a potential inflection point.

Instead of disruption, it created continuity.

“The transition from BluePay was great,” Ruggeri recalls. “CardConnect ended up being the better option compared to the other paths we could have taken.”

That continuity allowed the Paychex merchant services team to maintain its momentum. Merchants continued onboarding, sales teams continued selling, and Ruggeri’s division continued expanding.

Today, Paychex boards roughly 2,500 merchant accounts annually, with Ruggeri’s division responsible for closing those deals across the organization. Other Paychex sales representatives refer merchant services opportunities to Ruggeri’s team to finalize the solution and bring the merchant onboard.

That centralized approach allows his team to focus deeply on payments expertise, and it gives the rest of the organization confidence that merchant opportunities will be handled smoothly.

Simplicity That Helps Sales Teams Move Faster

In a competitive payments environment, speed and simplicity matter.

“They liked the savings, but they didn’t want to change how they were running their business,” Ruggeri recalls.

“Once I showed them how easy it was to run a card, store customer information for future payments, and set up recurring billing, they were sold,” he says.

The merchant signed shortly afterward. And seven years later, they’re still a client.

“Eric has been great to work with,” Ruggeri says. “He’s given me a lot of pointers over the years and helped me price deals correctly.”
